Throughout the film, "Blood Diamond" uses the African environment to provide several different contrasts. The first is the contrast of power, including an often seen division between black and white. Blood diamond also makes use of the landscape to create an underlying contrast between untouched land and that which is corrupted by human presence.
However the film does not solely send the message that diamond mines, and continual warfare is all that makes up the continent. Whether it is conveyed by a red sun, a jungle, or one mans revelation while surrounded by African beauty; this film does indeed show that Africa is beautiful. Many people when they think of Africa many times think very narrowly of Pyramids, the Sahara, and Cape Town. When in reality it is made up of many different biomes containing a plethora of beautiful landscapes such as waterfalls, canyons, jungles, and beaches.
Africa's only ugly when human corruption is able to convert the land into a machine for human greed. "Blood Diamond" portrays this well, making use of the environment to help create a powerful message through a fictitious medium. As said in the film: "This is Africa."
